PostgreSQL 19 is shaping up to be one of the most important releases for database operations teams in recent years. Rather than introducing flashy new SQL syntax, PostgreSQL 19 focuses on solving the problems that regularly wake DBAs and platform engineers in the middle of the night: bloated tables, long maintenance windows, vacuum bottlenecks, replication complexity, and risky upgrade procedures.
In this session, I will take you on a practical tour of the PostgreSQL 19 features that help reduce downtime, simplify maintenance, and improve the day-to-day operational experience of running PostgreSQL in production. We will explore Parallel Autovacuum and how it accelerates maintenance on heavily indexed tables, the new native REPACK command for reclaiming bloat with minimal disruption, and online logical replication that eliminates the need for planned downtime when enabling logical decoding.
We will also examine sequence replication for logical replication-based upgrades, WAIT FOR LSN for read-your-writes consistency on replicas, online checksum management, partition merge and split operations, and new observability enhancements that provide better visibility into vacuum, recovery, and lock activity.
