PostgreSQL 19 is shaping up to be an important release for database operations teams. Rather than focusing only on new SQL capabilities, this release introduces several improvements aimed at reducing maintenance pressure, simplifying replication-related operations, and improving visibility into production systems.
In this session, I will take you on a practical tour of the PostgreSQL 19 features that are most relevant to DBAs and platform engineers. We will explore Parallel Autovacuum and how it can reduce maintenance bottlenecks on heavily indexed tables, the new native REPACK command for reclaiming table bloat with less disruption, and dynamic WAL level behavior that allows logical decoding to be enabled on demand without requiring a server restart.
We will also examine sequence replication and how it helps address one of the long-standing gaps in logical replication-based major version upgrades, along with new observability enhancements that provide better visibility into vacuum activity, recovery state, locking, and other operational behavior.
